MRT Map Chinese

An MRT map in Chinese shows the same Singapore rail network you see on the English version, with every station labelled using its official Chinese name. The large map above uses those names throughout, while the line colours, station codes and route shapes stay exactly as they are on the standard system map. That means you can read the network in Chinese and still match what you see on platform signs, train displays and the English map at a glance. Who the Chinese MRT map helps

Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin Chinese and Tamil. You will see all four on station name signs, so a Chinese map is not a translation of convenience. It reflects names already used across the network every day.

The Chinese version is most useful for:

• Visitors who read Chinese more comfortably than English. Following a route in your own script is quicker, especially when you are tired or travelling with luggage.
• Older family members. Many prefer Chinese station names, and a printed map is easier to share at home than a phone screen.
• Students and language learners. Comparing the English and Chinese names is a practical way to pick up vocabulary and see how place names are rendered.
• Anyone giving directions. If a friend or relative knows a station only by its Chinese name, the map lets you find it and point to the matching code.

How station names work in Chinese

Station names in Chinese are not improvised. They are the official names used on station signs, and they follow two broad approaches.

Translations carry the meaning of the place. Chinatown is 牛车水, a long-established Chinese name for the area. City Hall becomes 政府大厦, which describes the building’s role as a government building. HarbourFront is 港湾, meaning harbour or bay. When you see names like these, the Chinese often tells you something about the place itself.

Transliterations follow the sound of the original name rather than its meaning. Bugis is 武吉士 and Orchard is 乌节. Read aloud in Mandarin, these sound close to the English and Malay names, but the characters themselves are chosen for sound, so do not try to read them literally.

This mix matters in practice. A translated name can look nothing like the English, so a Chinese reader may not immediately connect 牛车水 with the word “Chinatown” on an English sign. A transliterated name usually sounds right when spoken, which helps when you ask someone for directions. Either way, the station code is the common reference that never changes between languages.

Using the Chinese map to get around

The quickest way to use the Chinese map is to rely on what it shares with every other version: colours and codes. Each line keeps its colour, and each station keeps its letter and number code. Punggol Coast is NE18 and Hume is DT4 wherever they appear, so if you note the code, you can find the station on any sign or map in Singapore. Interchanges appear where two or more lines meet, and these stations carry more than one code. When planning a trip, find your start and end stations, trace the colours, and look for the point where you need to change. The interchange codes tell you which platforms to follow once you arrive.

A few practical tips:

• Write down the code as well as the Chinese name. Staff, apps and signs all recognise codes, even when the name is spoken differently.
• Remember the recent changes. The Circle Line loop was closed in July 2026 with Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward Road. Punggol Coast opened on 10 December 2024 and Hume on 28 February 2025. Older printed maps may not show them.
• Check what is not open yet. Marina South, Mount Pleasant, Bedok South, Sungei Bedok and Xilin are not yet in service. Our future MRT map shows where they fit.

Is the Chinese MRT map different from the English one?

Only in language. The lines, colours, station codes and layout are identical, so you can switch between versions without getting lost.
