Changi Airport MRT Station

Changi Airport MRT station (code CG2) is the terminus of the Changi Airport branch of the East West Line, in Changi at the eastern end of Singapore. It is an underground station operated by SMRT Trains, laid out on an east to west alignment. It links directly to Terminals 2 and 3 of Changi Airport, so passengers can walk from the platforms into the terminal buildings without going outdoors.

The station mainly serves air travellers arriving in or leaving Singapore, along with people who work at the airport and visitors heading to the shops and attractions in Jewel and the terminals. It gives travellers a rail alternative to taxis, private cars and buses for getting to and from the airport. The station is also set to become part of the Thomson-East Coast Line by the mid-2030s, when that line is extended to the airport’s fifth terminal.

History of Changi Airport MRT station

A rail link to the airport was first proposed in 1976, but it was set aside through the 1980s because studies found that most travellers preferred taxis and passenger numbers were too low to justify it. The idea was revived in 1994, when airport traffic grew faster than forecast and Terminal 3 was being planned, and the two-station branch was confirmed in 1996. Before it opened, part of a President’s Challenge 2001 charity walk passed through the tunnel between Expo and the airport. Changi Airport MRT station opened to passengers on 8 February 2002, with an official opening ceremony at the station later that month.

Designed by the architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Changi Airport MRT station has features intended for airport travellers, including wider faregates that make it easier to pass through with luggage. Glass atrium walls at each end of the station let in as much daylight as possible and support an illuminated bridge that crosses above the island platform.

Jewel Changi Airport is roughly a 6 minute walk away for shopping and dining, and the Changi Experience Studio and the Hedge Maze are both within about 7 minutes on foot. Closer still are the Butterfly Garden and a Koi pond, around 4 minutes away, while the Terminal 2 Orchid Garden is about 6 minutes’ walk. That makes Changi Airport MRT station a practical stop for a few hours at the airport attractions, as well as for travellers with time to spare before a flight.
