Most people who use the station live in the Potong Pasir housing estate or in the private homes nearby, such as the Sennett Estate, Sennett Residence, Nin Residence and Saint Ritz. It is also the closest station for St Andrew’s Village, the shared campus of St Andrew’s Junior School, St Andrew’s Secondary School and St Andrew’s Junior College, so students and school staff make up a regular part of the crowd.
History of Potong Pasir MRT station
When the North East Line stations were first revealed in March 1996, this one was listed under the working name Sennett and was only to open once there was enough demand. As the area was an opposition ward at the time, the station’s uncertain future became a political debate, and it was not until February 2002 that the government confirmed it would open with the rest of the line under the name Potong Pasir. Trains began calling here on 20 June 2003. The name comes from Malay and means “cut sand”, recalling the sand quarries that once operated in the district.
Inside Potong Pasir MRT station
The station is spread over two underground levels and was built as a Civil Defence shelter. As you move through it, look out for Point of View by Matthew Ngui, an Art-in-Transit work of anamorphic images and text placed around the station, which look distorted until you stand at the right angle to read them.
For everyday errands, The Poiz Centre is right beside Potong Pasir MRT station, about a minute’s walk away, and is the obvious stop for shopping and a quick meal. If you prefer local food, Broadway is roughly two minutes on foot, with Lao Zhong Zhong Eating House a little further along.
