Most people using the station are office workers heading to the commercial towers around it, such as Asia Square, Marina One, One Raffles Quay, V on Shenton and OUE Downtown. The Singapore Conference Hall is also nearby. Downtown station on the Downtown Line and Tanjong Pagar station on the East West Line are both within walking distance, so commuters moving around the financial district on foot can easily reach other lines from here.
History of Shenton Way MRT station
The station first appeared in plans in August 2012 as part of the Thomson Line, which was later combined with the Eastern Region Line in 2014 to create the Thomson-East Coast Line. It opened to passengers on 13 November 2022, about a year later than first expected because of construction limits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Building it was a tight job: the site lies right beside Asia Square Tower 2, and a canal running above the station had to be diverted into a temporary channel while work went on.
Inside Shenton Way MRT station
The platforms are stacked one above the other, and the station goes down to a depth of 38 metres. Look out for two artworks. Stride Alongside the Bo-men by Daisy Boman is a group of three white sculptures representing people commuting into the business district, donated by PSA International. Everyday Singapore by Quek Kiat Sing shows ordinary scenes, including the lunch crowd at Lau Pa Sat and people queuing at an ATM, set among images from an old series of Singapore banknotes.
Beyond the daily commute, the station is a handy stop for lunch and short outings in the city centre. Marina One is roughly a four minute walk away, and the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre is just as close for anyone interested in exhibitions and performances. Lau Pa Sat, the well known food centre, takes about six minutes on foot, making it a popular choice for a quick meal. If you have more time, Chinatown can be reached in around a quarter of an hour of walking.
