Most people using the station are residents of the surrounding Bukit Panjang neighbourhood. They ride the automated trains for short local journeys to shops, food centres and the town’s bus interchange. They also travel to Choa Chu Kang MRT/LRT station, where the Bukit Panjang LRT connects with the MRT network for longer trips across the island. Occasional visitors tend to come for the nearby malls and the public library, both within a few minutes’ walk.
History of Petir LRT station
The station is part of Singapore’s first LRT line, which began carrying passengers on 6 November 1999. Before construction started, a public exhibition in 1996 invited visitors to vote on the colours of the trains and the shape of the station roofs, so local residents had a direct say in how the line looks. As the system approached the end of its 20-year design lifespan, a major renewal began in 2019 covering signalling, power rails and trains, with completion scheduled for 2026.
Inside Petir LRT station
Trains here run in two-car formations and stop at an elevated platform fitted with platform barriers, which were installed at every station on the line by 2017. Because of the ongoing renewal, passengers may notice a mix of refurbished and newer trains while the older first-generation fleet is gradually replaced.
