The station is used mainly by people living in the nearby housing, including the neighbourhoods covered by the Punggol Parc Terraces and Punggol BayVue Residents’ Networks. Many riders use it for short trips around the loop or to reach Punggol station, which links both LRT loops with the North East Line for journeys further across Singapore. It also draws visitors heading to the waterfront park and the shopping mall within walking distance.
History of Sumang LRT station
Sumang LRT station opened on 29 June 2014 as one of the first three stations on the West Loop, which had stayed closed for nearly a decade after the East Loop began service because this part of Punggol was then less populated. In its early years, West Loop trains ran in one direction only, following the main flow of commuters, at intervals of about 7 to 8 minutes. As more residents moved in, trains in both directions began on 29 September 2018, making return journeys around the loop much shorter.
Inside Sumang LRT station
Trains here are fully automated, so there is no driver on board, and the line has been running two-car trains since December 2016 to handle growing passenger numbers. Between 2018 and 2022 the line went through renewal works to improve reliability, and a new fleet of 25 two-car trains entered service in 2025, replacing the older single-car trains and some of the earlier two-car sets.
For everyday needs, Sumang LRT station puts several useful places within an easy walk. Foodgle, a food centre about a minute away, is the quickest option for a meal, while Kimly Coffeeshop and 7 Lucky Star Coffee Shop offer more choice a few minutes further on. My Waterway@Punggol, only about two minutes on foot, is a good choice for a walk, jog or cycle along the water, and Waterway Point, around seven minutes away, covers shopping, groceries and dining in one place. Residents also use the station to reach the two Residents’ Networks nearby for community activities and events.
