The station is one of only two MRT stops serving Yishun New Town, the other being Khatib, so it handles a large share of the town’s daily rail traffic. Most of its passengers are local residents heading to work or school, people changing between trains and buses at the neighbouring bus interchange, and shoppers visiting the large mall right beside it.
History of Yishun MRT station
The station opened on 20 December 1988, two years ahead of its planned schedule, and for more than seven years it was the northern end of the North South Line. That changed on 10 February 1996, when the Woodlands Extension opened and trains began continuing beyond Yishun. During planning the station was known as Nee Soon North, and it took its current name when construction began in December 1984. It was later one of three stations chosen to test whether platform screen doors would work at elevated stations, a trial that led to their use across the network.
Inside Yishun MRT station
The platforms are fitted with half-height platform screen doors, which have been in operation since 2 December 2009, and large high-volume low-speed fans have helped keep the platforms cooler since 27 June 2012. Cyclists can also make use of extra bicycle parking, as Yishun was among the first ten stations to receive additional racks under the National Cycling Plan announced in 2010.
For residents and visitors alike, Yishun MRT station is a convenient base for everyday errands. Northpoint City is about 190 m away, roughly a three-minute walk, and is the obvious stop for shopping. If you want a quick meal, Kopitiam and Cantine by Kopitiam are only about 90 m from the station, while S11 food court is around 110 m away.
Yishun Public Library lies about 160 m away for anyone who needs a quiet place to read or study, and Yishun Bus Interchange is around a four-minute walk for onward journeys by bus.
