The people who use the station most are residents of the surrounding Sengkang housing estate. For them, the LRT is a short link to Sengkang station, the interchange where the east and west loops meet and where passengers can change to the North East Line of the MRT for journeys into the city and beyond. Students, shoppers and people heading to nearby food centres and community facilities also use it for quick trips within the town.

History of Tongkang LRT station

The station opened on 29 January 2005 together with most of the west loop, two years after the east loop began running, when most of Sengkang’s residents still lived on the eastern side of the town. In its early years, west loop trains ran in only one direction at a time to match the main flow of passengers: anti-clockwise from early morning until mid-afternoon, then clockwise until close of service. Trains in both directions throughout the day only arrived on 1 January 2013, and two-car trains joined the line in December 2015 as ridership grew.

Inside Tongkang LRT station

Trains calling here are fully automated, with no driver on board, and run on rubber tyres along the guideway. A new fleet of two-car trains started entering service on 15 July 2025 and is gradually replacing many of the older cars, so passengers may see both old and new trains at the platform for some time.

For daily life, Tongkang LRT station is a convenient starting point. Life Community, a community club, is about a four-minute walk away, and two places for a meal are close by: Kwek Seng Huat Eating House at around seven minutes on foot and Anchorvale 303 Foodcourt at around nine. For shopping, Buangkok Square Mall is roughly a twelve-minute walk, while Compass One is a little further at about seventeen minutes. Visitors to Sengkang General & Community Hospital can also walk there in about sixteen minutes, which makes the station a practical option for patients and families who live along the west loop.
