The station is used mainly by residents of the surrounding public housing estate, who ride the East Loop to Sengkang station. There they can change to the North East Line for journeys towards the city and other parts of Singapore. Because the stop sits close to several coffeeshops, a market and shopping malls, it also sees shoppers and diners from nearby blocks who ride a stop or two rather than walk.

History of Ranggung LRT station

Ranggung LRT station opened with the rest of the East Loop on 18 January 2003, when rides on the new line were free for the first two days. At the time, around nine in ten Sengkang residents lived along the East Loop, while the area served by the West Loop was still largely undeveloped. Trains on the line originally ran as single cars, and two-car operations began in December 2015 to cope with growing ridership. Since 15 July 2025, a new fleet of two-car trains has been entering service, with more sets due to arrive until 2028.

Inside Ranggung LRT station

Passengers board from platforms on the elevated viaduct, so expect to go up from street level to reach the trains. Services are fully automated, with no driver on board, and some trains run as two cars, so it helps to spread out along the platform at busier times.

For residents, Ranggung LRT station is a convenient base for everyday errands. Happy Hawkers is about a minute’s walk away and suits a quick meal. Sengkang 266 Coffeeshop and Kopitiam City are a few minutes further. For fresh produce and hawker food, Sengkang New Market is roughly an eight-minute walk.
