Most passengers are people who work in the factories, warehouses and business spaces around Tuas, including staff at JTC Space @ Tuas and Mapletree Pioneer Logistic Hub. Because the area is largely industrial, the station tends to be busiest when shifts begin and end. Outside working hours it is noticeably quieter. You may hear the name said as “Gull” or “Gool”; both pronunciations are used.
History of Gul Circle MRT station
The station opened on 18 June 2017 as part of the Tuas West Extension, which carried the East West Line further west into Tuas. It was first announced in 2011 under the working name Tuas, and its current name was chosen through a public poll in April 2012. In July 2026 the government announced that the station will become an interchange with the Cross Island Line as part of that line’s third phase, with the new platforms expected by the late 2030s.
Inside Gul Circle MRT station
At 33 metres high, this is the tallest elevated station in Singapore, because the tracks have to climb over the Tuas Flyover of the Ayer Rajah Expressway and then run along the Tuas Viaduct. The three-storey building uses stacked island platforms, with trains in each direction on different levels, and it was the first elevated station in the country built this way. You will also notice extra side platforms and track that are not in use. These were built for a possible branch to Tuas South, which has since been shelved, though the provisions are being kept in case demand grows later.
For most visitors, Gul Circle MRT station is a practical stop for reaching a workplace or appointment in western Tuas. Nearby landmarks include JTC Space @ Tuas and Mapletree Pioneer Logistic Hub, both of which house a range of industrial and logistics businesses, as well as Tuas Fire Station. Golfers heading to Raffles Golf Course may also find the station useful. More shops and amenities are planned for the surrounding area, and the future Cross Island Line link should make the station a more convenient transfer point for people travelling across the west of Singapore.
