Gardens by the Bay MRT station is an underground stop on the Thomson-East Coast Line, identified by the station code TE22. History of Gardens by the Bay MRT station

The station was first announced on 29 August 2012 as part of the planned Thomson Line, which was later combined with the Eastern Region Line to create the Thomson-East Coast Line. Building work began in 2014, but restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the completion of this stage of the line back by a year. The station finally welcomed its first passengers on 13 November 2022, opening alongside the rest of the line’s third stage.

The station is a designated Civil Defence shelter and is run by SMRT Trains, the operator of the Thomson-East Coast Line. Passengers passing through can see Planting Shadows by Vertical Submarine, an Art-in-Transit work showing the shadows of tropical plants based on drawings made during Singapore’s colonial era. The piece links those early records of local plant life with the gardens outside, while also drawing attention to how little nature remains in much of the city.

For a day out, the station puts several places within an easy walk. The Marina Barrage Pump House is about five minutes away on foot, and the main grounds of Gardens by the Bay can be reached in roughly six minutes.
