History of Clementi MRT station

Passenger service began on 12 March 1988, following a two-day public preview on 27 and 28 February. At the time, the station was the western end of the first section of the network, which ran from Tiong Bahru. On its opening day it was the most visited station on that section, with 125,618 passengers. It was first numbered W8 and took its current code of EW23 in August 2001, when station codes were revised across the growing system.

Inside Clementi MRT station

The station has four entrances, and two link bridges with extra fare gates and escalators connect it to newer flats in the area. Half-height platform screen doors were fitted in 2012 for safety, and large overhead fans above the platforms help keep the air moving. While waiting, look out for Echoes of Clementi by Ashley Goh Yu Ting, a mural in SMRT’s Comic Connect series. It shows the town’s landmarks, plants and wildlife, and traces Clementi’s growth from a kampung into a town hub.

For residents and visitors alike, the station is a convenient base for shopping, meals and errands in the town centre. The Clementi Mall and Grantral Mall @ Clementi are both about a four-minute walk away, so they suit a quick stop for groceries or a meal. For local food, Clementi Market is roughly six minutes on foot and offers hawker fare and fresh produce, while Hawkers’ Street @ Clementi Mall is a closer option for a fast lunch. Anyone heading out for exercise or a sports event can reach Clementi Stadium in about 13 minutes on foot from Clementi MRT station.
