HarbourFront MRT Station

HarbourFront MRT station is an underground interchange on the southern edge of Singapore, located beneath Telok Blangah Road in the HarbourFront area, close to the Singapore Strait. It is served by two lines. On the Circle Line it carries the code CC29, and on the North East Line it is NE1, the southern terminus of that line.

History of HarbourFront MRT station

The North East Line platforms opened on 20 June 2003, at the same time as every other station on that line. When the stop was first announced in 1996, it carried the working name World Trade Centre, after the exhibition complex beside it, and the earliest plans from 1986 had the line ending at Outram Park instead of continuing to the harbour. The Circle Line platforms opened on 8 October 2011, turning HarbourFront MRT station into an interchange between the two lines.

Inside HarbourFront MRT station

As a nod to its seaside setting, the concourse features an elliptical design that resembles the hull of a ship. Under the Art-in-Transit programme, the North East Line platforms and concourse display a series of line drawings by Ian Woo, while the Circle Line platforms feature Commuting Waves by Jason Ong and a set of art seats called Matrix. Passengers transferring between the Circle Line and the North East Line can do so without leaving the station.

For most visitors, HarbourFront MRT station is the obvious stop for shopping, eating and a day out by the water. VivoCity is about a two minute walk away, and quick meals are easy to find at food halls such as Kopitiam Food Hall, Encik Tan and Food Republic, all within a short stroll of the platforms. Families heading for the Singapore Oceanarium can reach it on foot in around 13 minutes.

Those who prefer a quieter walk can visit local landmarks such as the Big Banyan Tree or the Seah Im Air Raid Shelter, each about ten minutes away. Residents of the surrounding estates use the station for direct links across the city on two lines, while cruise passengers and Sentosa visitors find it a convenient starting point for their trips.
