Khatib MRT Station

Khatib MRT station is an elevated stop on the North South Line, carrying the code NS14, and stands at the junction of Yishun Ring Road and Yishun Avenue 2. It lies in Khatib, a subzone of the Yishun planning area in the north of Singapore, and its platforms are raised above street level rather than built underground.

Together with Yishun station, it is one of only two stations serving Yishun New Town, so most of its passengers are local residents travelling to work, school or the city centre. People visiting the nearby hospitals, the stadium and neighbourhood facilities also use it. If you are riding south, expect a longer journey than usual between stops. The stretch of track from Khatib to the next station in that direction is the longest between any two stations on the MRT network.

History of Khatib MRT station

While it was being built, the station was planned first as Nee Soon South and later as Sembawang. It took the name Khatib in January 1987, after Sungei Khatib Bongsu, a river close by, and a military base in the area. Half-height screen doors along the platform edges came into use on 30 September 2011, and large high-volume low-speed fans have helped keep the platforms cooler since 28 August 2012.

Step-free access improved in 2013, when lifts were added to the overhead pedestrian bridge near the station. The work was completed by the end of that year, which helps wheelchair users, older passengers and anyone with a pram or heavy luggage. Cyclists are also catered for. Khatib was in the first group of ten stations to receive additional bicycle parking under the National Cycling Plan announced in 2010, making it practical to ride to the station and continue by train.

For many visitors, Khatib MRT station is the stop for Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, which is roughly a 16 minute walk away, making it useful for patients and those visiting family. Yishun Stadium is under ten minutes on foot for sports events and training. Families looking for something different can walk about seven minutes to the Live Turtle Museum. For shopping and everyday errands, Wisteria Mall is around a 15 minute walk from the station.

• Wisteria Mall and both hospitals are roughly fifteen minutes or more on foot, so consider taking a feeder bus if you prefer not to walk.
• During morning and evening peak hours, trains on the North South Line can be busy, so allow extra time when travelling to or from Khatib.
• Khatib is not an interchange station, so if you need to transfer to another MRT line, plan to do so at a station further along the North South Line such as Bishan or Orchard.
