The station sits among housing estates, and most of its passengers are residents of the surrounding flats travelling to work or school. Students also use it heavily, since Christ Church Secondary School, Woodgrove Secondary School, Innova Primary School and Singapore Sports School are all in the area. Patients and visitors heading to Woodlands Hospital make up another regular group of travellers.
History of Woodlands South MRT station
Woodlands South MRT station was first revealed in August 2012 as part of the planned Thomson Line, which was later combined with the Eastern Region Line to create the Thomson-East Coast Line. It opened to passengers on 31 January 2020 together with the other stations of the line’s first phase, following a public open house on 11 January 2020. For more than a year it served as the end of the line, until the second phase opened on 28 August 2021.
Inside Woodlands South MRT station
The station has two underground levels and sits about 22 metres below the street. Its five entrances, designed by Aedas, were planned to let in as much daylight as possible. From the concourse you can look straight down onto the platforms, which are reached by escalators and staircases. Along the concourse is 3652 + 50, an Art-in-Transit work by Kng Mian Tze that arranges promises written in 2013 by 50 local volunteers into a green Penrose tiling pattern.
For everyday trips, Woodlands South MRT station is a practical stop for anyone with business in this part of Woodlands. ACE The Place CC is only a few minutes away on foot, and Woodlands Hospital and Yusof Ishak Mosque are both close by, which makes the station a sensible choice for hospital appointments or visits to the mosque. For shopping and meals, Vista Point and several food centres, including Kopitiam corner and De Tian, are within a ten minute walk. Innova Junior College is a little further away, at roughly twelve minutes on foot.
