Most passengers are shoppers heading to Sim Lim Square, students and staff of LASALLE College of the Arts, and people visiting Tekka Centre or the nearby places of worship, including Kwang Im Tong Temple, Masjid Abdul Gafoor and the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. Hotel guests and residents of the surrounding housing also use it daily. Since March 2018, travellers can walk between this station and Jalan Besar MRT station without a fare penalty, which lets them avoid riding around the loop of the Downtown Line.
History of Rochor MRT station
The station was announced in July 2008 as part of Downtown Line Stage 2 and opened with the rest of that stage on 27 December 2015. Building it was one of the harder jobs on the line, because the site sat on deep, soft marine clay that engineers compared to peanut butter, and the Rochor Canal and main roads had to be moved several times. Even so, the work finished on time with no accidents, earning praise from the Ministry of Manpower and an award from the Singapore Concrete Institute.
Inside Rochor MRT station
Designed by Architects61, the platforms and ceilings carry a circuit board pattern, a nod to the area’s electronics trade, and the engraved lines in the ceiling double as direction markers. The main entrance has ramps to deal with the sloping ground, and the entrances link to buses, taxis and bicycle parking. On the lift shaft, look for Tracing Memories, an Art-in-Transit work by LASALLE students showing vintage objects from the old Thieves’ Market arranged to look like a motherboard.
For visitors, Rochor MRT station is a convenient base for shopping and culture on foot. Tekka Place is about a minute’s walk away, and Sim Lim Square, the go-to spot for computer parts and gadgets, takes around two minutes. The Indian Heritage Centre is roughly three minutes away for anyone exploring Little India’s history, while Tekka Centre, with its wet market and food stalls, is about five minutes on foot. Those with more time can also reach The Gem Museum and the House of Tan Teng Niah within a short stroll.
