An underground walkway joins the station to AMK Hub, Ang Mo Kio Bus Interchange and the wider Ang Mo Kio Town Centre. Because of this, the station handles a steady mix of local residents travelling to and from the town centre, commuters switching between buses and trains, and shoppers heading for the malls nearby. History of Ang Mo Kio MRT station
The station opened on 7 November 1987 as one of the five stations that together form the oldest part of Singapore’s MRT network. It originally carried the code N9 before the current NS16 numbering was adopted. A new chapter is planned: the Cross Island Line will add an interchange here with the code CR11, a project held back by restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic and now expected to open in 2030.
Inside Ang Mo Kio MRT station
Unlike other stops on the North South Line, the station has four platforms serving three tracks, with two of those tracks used by trains running to and from Bishan Depot, so it pays to follow the platform signs carefully. Half-height platform screen doors have been in operation since 2 December 2011, and large high-volume, low-speed ceiling fans were switched on in June 2012 to keep the platforms cooler.
For most people, Ang Mo Kio MRT station is the gateway to the town centre. Ang Mo Kio Interchange is about 130 metres away for onward bus journeys, and Ang Mo Kio Hub, roughly a two-minute walk, covers shopping, errands and meals in one place. If you want a quick, inexpensive bite, the S-11 food centre is about four minutes on foot, while Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East next door offers a green spot to pause between trips.
