Most of the people passing through the gates live in the HDB blocks of northern Toa Payoh New Town and use the line for daily journeys to work, school and the city. Residents of the nearby condominiums Trevista, Gem Residences and Orie also have the station within walking distance, so it serves a mix of public and private housing. Outside the morning and evening peaks, you will mostly find shoppers, older residents and people heading to the area’s many food centres.
History of Braddell MRT station
The station opened on 7 November 1987 as one of the first five stations on the MRT network, which makes it among the oldest stops in Singapore. When the system was being planned in the early 1980s, the closely packed HDB blocks around Toa Payoh meant the tunnels had to run directly under Lorong 2 Toa Payoh and follow the curve of the road. That bend made a central shared platform impractical, and the station could not be moved: shifting it south would have placed it too near Toa Payoh station, while housing blocks and factories ruled out a site further north.
Inside Braddell MRT station
Braddell MRT station is one of only two stations on the North South Line, along with Canberra, built with side platforms instead of a single island platform between the tracks. Each direction has its own platform on opposite sides of the line, so check the direction signs before going down to make sure you reach the correct side for your journey.
For residents and visitors alike, the station is a practical starting point for some of Toa Payoh’s best known places to eat. Johnson Eatery is about a four minute walk away, while Toa Payoh West Market & Food Centre and Lorong 4 Blk 93 Market and Hawker Centre can each be reached in around six minutes on foot, making it easy to combine a meal with a trip on the line.
Further afield, Toa Payoh Public Library is roughly a 14 minute walk from the station, and Mount Alvernia Hospital is around 17 minutes away, which is useful for patients and visitors who prefer to travel by train and walk the final stretch.
