Canberra MRT Station

Canberra MRT station is an elevated stop on the North South Line, with the station code NS12. It stands beside Canberra Link at its junction with Canberra Way, in the eastern part of Sembawang, close to the neighbouring town of Yishun and a short distance from the Sungei Simpang Kiri river. The station is named after Canberra Link, a road that itself takes its name from the capital of Australia.

The station fills what used to be a gap on the line between Sembawang and Yishun stations. Most of its passengers are people living in the surrounding housing estates, with around 17,000 households expected to benefit from it. Shoppers heading to Canberra Plaza, the mall directly across the road, also use it.

History of Canberra MRT station

The station opened to passengers on 2 November 2019. It was the second infill station on the MRT network, after Dover, and used the code NS12, which had been held in reserve since the stretch from Yew Tee to Sembawang opened in 1996. It also became the first MRT station to receive a Platinum rating under the Building and Construction Authority’s Green Mark scheme for transit stations, in recognition of its landscaping and use of eco-friendly materials.

Inside Canberra MRT station

There are five entrances. Four are linked by covered walkways to a pair of bus stops, two pick-up and drop-off points and parking for more than 500 bicycles. The fifth is a sheltered footbridge across Canberra Link that connects to Canberra Plaza and leads straight onto the platform for trains towards Marina South Pier, so city-bound passengers can skip the concourse.

Canberra was the first station in Singapore with a platform joined directly to an overhead bridge at the same level. The building has a nautical design, shaped like a ship in a nod to Sembawang’s past as a British naval base, with glass sides that let in natural light. Look out for Symbiosis, an artwork by Singaporean artist Tan Zi Xi that celebrates plants and animals and draws on sketches made by local residents.

For day-to-day use, Canberra MRT station is handy for a range of errands and outings close to the exits:

• Yishun Park Connector, about a minute’s walk away, for walking, jogging or cycling.
• Canberra Plaza, around two minutes on foot, for shopping and everyday needs.
• Cantine, a food centre about two minutes away, for a quick meal.
• Sembawang Shopping Centre, roughly a nine-minute walk, for more shops.

Masjid Darul Makmur is about a 14-minute walk from the station, making the station a practical choice for worshippers travelling by train.

• Sembawang Shopping Centre is roughly a 9-minute walk away, so allow extra time or consider taking a bus if you prefer not to walk in the heat.
• The Bunker and Masjid Darul Makmur are both over 750 metres away, so taking a bus from near the station is advisable rather than walking.
• During morning and evening peak hours, trains on the North South Line can be busy, so allow a little extra time if you are travelling to or from the city.
