Queenstown MRT Station

Queenstown MRT station is an elevated station on the East West Line, numbered EW19. It stands on the central reservation of Commonwealth Avenue in Queenstown, so the platforms sit above the middle of the road rather than beside it. The station is run by SMRT Trains and has two exits, linked to both sides of Commonwealth Avenue by a pedestrian bridge.

History of Queenstown MRT station

The station opened on 12 March 1988, when the whole MRT system began operating, and Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew rode a train to Queenstown during the opening ceremony. Early plans called it Princess, and it was later announced as Commonwealth, but in March 1987 it swapped names with the neighbouring Commonwealth station so that each name better matched its surroundings. Its original station number was W5, which became EW19 in August 2001 when station codes were changed across the network.

Trains in both directions stop at a single island platform, which is fitted with half-height platform screen doors and large high-volume low-speed fans to keep air moving. The station is wheelchair-accessible and has bicycle facilities. Its design draws on traditional shophouses: the coloured horizontal louvres that wrap around the building are meant to recall shophouse windows, the pastel blue walls echo colours used on shophouse fronts, and the cantilevered roof helps keep rain off the platform.

For everyday errands and meals, the station puts several useful places within a short walk. Food is the main draw: Margaret Drive Hawker Centre and Mei Ling Market and Food Centre are each about six minutes away on foot, giving residents and visitors a choice of hawker stalls and a wet market.

Queenstown Public Library and Queenstown Sports Complex are around seven minutes from the station, making it a practical stop for students, readers and anyone heading to train or swim.
