Promenade MRT Station

Promenade MRT station lies beneath Temasek Avenue in Singapore’s Downtown Core, next to Millenia Tower and a short walk from the Marina Promenade that gave it its name. It is an underground interchange served by two lines: the Circle Line, where it carries the code CC4, and the Downtown Line, where it is DT15. The Circle Line also divides here into two branches, one running towards Dhoby Ghaut and the other towards Marina Bay. Riders on that line often pass through or change trains at this station.

The people using the station are a mix of shoppers, passengers changing between the Circle and Downtown lines, and visitors heading for the Marina Bay area. Three shopping malls sit within a few minutes’ walk. The station also serves visitors going to the Singapore Flyer, The Float@Marina Bay and the Marina Bay Street Circuit, which makes it especially useful on event days.

History of Promenade MRT station

The station opened on 17 April 2010 with the first two stages of the Circle Line. Its Downtown Line platforms followed on 22 December 2013. It was originally planned under the name Millenia. A public poll favoured Sheares, after former president Benjamin Sheares, but that name was judged too prestigious for one of many underground stations, so Promenade was settled on in 2005. On 14 January 2012, the Circle Line branch to Marina Bay via Bayfront began running from here.

Inside Promenade MRT station

Allow a little extra time if you are transferring to the Downtown Line. Its platforms are 42 m below ground, the second deepest on the MRT network after Bencoolen, and the station has one of the network’s longest escalators at 17.56 m. On the Circle Line platforms, the artwork “Dreams in a Social Cosmic Odyssey” by PHUNK studios hangs large metallic droplets beneath the skylights, which scatter reflected sunlight across the floor. Downstairs on the Downtown Line, Ana Prvacki’s “Earthcake” uses stacked coloured layers that suggest both the ground’s geology and a layered local kueh.

For most visitors and residents, Promenade MRT station is the stop for shopping and for walks around Marina Bay. Millenia Walk is the closest mall at about 150 m, or two minutes on foot. Suntec City is around 210 m away and Marina Square about 390 m. Families with young children can reach Pororo Park in roughly eight minutes. For an evening walk, The Helix Bridge is about ten minutes away, and from there you can carry on to the ArtScience Museum, roughly 800 m from the station.
