Many passengers come here for the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) Building, which stands close to the station. Others use it to reach Jalan Besar Stadium, Jalan Besar Community Club or Kitchener Complex. The station has two exits, and both are oriented towards these local landmarks, so it works well for people with an appointment at ICA as well as for residents of the surrounding streets.
History of Lavender MRT station
The station opened on 4 November 1989, when the stretch of the East West Line from City Hall to Tanah Merah began service. Early plans called it Crawford station, and it was renamed Lavender in September 1984. The name comes from the subzone it serves, and is thought to have started as an ironic joke about the bad smells once linked to the nearby Kallang Gasworks or to the night soil used as fertiliser. When it opened, the station carried the code E2, which changed to EW11 in August 2001 as part of a renumbering of the whole network.
Inside Lavender MRT station
Lavender is one of nine stations on the original MRT network that were built to serve as emergency bomb shelters. For this purpose it was fitted with steel blast doors and reinforced concrete walls 2 metres thick, features you are unlikely to notice on a normal journey but which make it more robust than an ordinary underground station.
Beyond trips to ICA, Lavender MRT station is a practical starting point for several places within walking distance. XM Studios, a gallery, is just a couple of minutes away on foot. Aperia Mall and Jalan Besar Stadium are both around a six minute walk, which makes the station useful on match days and for everyday shopping.
