Dover MRT Station

Dover MRT station is an elevated stop on the East West Line, identified by the station code EW22. It stands beside Commonwealth Avenue West and takes its name from the nearby Dover Road. Like the rest of the East West Line, it is operated by SMRT Trains, and its raised position means passengers reach the platforms by going up from street level rather than down.

Most people who use the station are students. A linkbridge connects it directly to Singapore Polytechnic, so many students can walk from the train to campus without crossing the main road. The station also serves pupils at the School of Science & Technology and New Town Secondary School. Residents of nearby housing such as Fontana Heights and Marbella Condo use it for daily journeys, and it is expected to serve the new homes planned for Dover Forest.

History of Dover MRT station

The station opened to passengers on 18 October 2001, and an official ceremony followed on 23 October. A stop at this spot was first suggested in 1988 to serve the polytechnic, but the idea was set aside because too few riders were expected, and it only went ahead after a fresh announcement in 1997. While it was being built, it carried the working name Singapore Polytechnic. It was also the first station on the MRT network to be added to a line that was already running, so trains kept passing through the site throughout the works.

Inside Dover MRT station

The station has three levels under an arched metal roof held up by stainless steel columns, and the concourse is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, which keeps it bright during the day. Unlike most MRT stations, Dover has side platforms, one for each direction, so check you are on the correct side before going up. Lifts and ramps give step-free access, and tactile flooring guides visually impaired passengers through the station. Half-height platform screen doors line the platform edges, and large ceiling fans above the platforms help keep air moving on warm days.

For most visitors, Dover MRT station is the natural stop for Singapore Polytechnic, which is about a five-minute walk away. Several food courts sit within a few minutes of the station, including Food Court 4, which is the closest at around three minutes on foot, so a quick, inexpensive meal is easy to find between lectures or before catching a train home. Students heading to the Technical University of Munich (Asia) or DigiPen Singapore can reach both in roughly seven minutes. If you have time to spare, the Former Buona Vista Battery No. 2 Gun is a longer walk of about 14 minutes and makes a short historical detour from the station.
