Yew Tee MRT Station

Yew Tee MRT station is an elevated station on the North South Line, carrying the code NS5. It stands in Yew Tee, in the west of Singapore, and runs alongside Choa Chu Kang Drive. SMRT Corporation operates the station, and four exits connect the platforms above with the streets and buildings below.

Most passengers are people who live in the surrounding housing estates and travel to work or school each day. Students heading to Unity Secondary School and Yew Tee Primary School also use the station, as do shoppers bound for the two malls that sit almost beside it. Because the line is above ground here, passengers get open views across the neighbourhood while waiting on the platform.

History of Yew Tee MRT station

The station opened on 10 February 1996 as part of the Woodlands extension of the North South Line. When it was first announced in 1991, planners called it Choa Chu Kang North, and the name was changed to Yew Tee later that year. The new name comes from Yew Tee village, which once stood off Woodlands Road, and one former resident linked the village name to oil kept there during the Japanese occupation. The station was originally numbered N20 and took its present code, NS5, in August 2001 when the network’s numbering was revised.

Inside Yew Tee MRT station

The station is wheelchair accessible and has bicycle facilities for riders who cycle to the train. Half-height platform screen doors were fitted in March 2012 to make the platform edge safer, and large high-volume low-speed fans were added by early 2013 to keep air moving on hot days. Like its neighbours on the Woodlands extension, the building has a kampong-style roof and colours chosen to suit the area, and its platform is roomier than those on older parts of the line because the electrical maintenance room was moved up to the concourse.

For everyday errands, Yew Tee MRT station is very convenient. Yew Tee Square and YewTee Point are both about a minute’s walk away, so groceries, meals and shopping are close at hand. Families with young children can walk to Yew Tee Waterplay Plaza in around three minutes, while Yew Tee Community Club is about seven minutes on foot for classes and local activities. Those wanting a simple meal can try NTUC Foodfare or V6 Food Court, and Choa Chu Kang Stadium is within a reasonable walk for anyone planning to exercise.
