Choa Chu Kang MRT station is an elevated interchange in the centre of Choa Chu Kang, in the west of Singapore, sitting between Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4 and Choa Chu Kang Loop. Most passengers are residents of the surrounding HDB estates travelling to work, school or the city, along with commuters changing between the MRT and the LRT. Many others arrive from the bus interchange next door or come to shop and eat at the mall beside the station. The station is also set to become the terminus of the Jurong Region Line, which will make it a meeting point for three rail lines.
History of Choa Chu Kang MRT station
The station opened on 10 March 1990, although it was first announced as Bukit Panjang and only took the name Choa Chu Kang in 1987. For its first six years it was the end of a short branch line running from Jurong East, and it joined the North South Line on 10 February 1996 when the Woodlands Extension opened. The LRT platforms followed on 6 November 1999, and the Jurong Region Line is expected to reach the station in mid-2028.
Inside Choa Chu Kang MRT station
The North South Line uses a single island platform fitted with half-height screen doors, under a pitched roof shaped like an upside-down “V” and brick walls chosen to match the nearby HDB blocks. On the LRT side, passengers board from a central platform and leave from two exit-only side platforms added in 2016 to ease crowding, and a widened staircase links the MRT and LRT levels. A covered linkway leads straight to Lot One, and the station displays a mural by APSN Katong School, made as part of SMRT’s Comic Connect.
For most people, Choa Chu Kang MRT station is the gateway to the town’s main shopping and services cluster, nearly all of it within a couple of minutes on foot. Lot One Shoppers’ Mall is about 80 m away and is the obvious stop for shopping, meals and errands, while Food Junction, at a similar distance, offers a quick and affordable meal.
Choa Chu Kang Public Library is roughly 90 m from the station, making it easy to borrow books on the way home. Commuters heading further into the estates can walk about 120 m to Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange, and residents attending classes or events will find Keat Hong Community Club around 150 m away.
