The station is built into the town centre. It connects directly to Compass One, Compass Heights and Sengkang Bus Interchange, and Compassvale Bus Interchange is a short walk away. Most passengers are local residents changing between the LRT, buses and the North East Line on their daily commute, along with shoppers visiting the mall. Both the East loop and the West loop of the LRT start and end here, so it is the main transfer point for the surrounding estates.
History of Sengkang MRT station
The elevated LRT platforms opened first, on 18 January 2003, together with the East loop of the Sengkang LRT. The underground North East Line platforms followed on 20 June that year, and West loop trains began calling here on 29 January 2005. This was the first station on the network to bring MRT, LRT and buses together in one hub. A larger LRT platform opened at the end of September 2024, with signs and queue markings showing where each of the four LRT routes stops.
Inside Sengkang MRT station
The station has four levels: two platform levels, a mezzanine and a ground level concourse. Its open, atrium style layout and glass walls let you see between levels, which makes it easier to find your way around. For step free access, lifts have been added to the overhead pedestrian bridges since 2013, with a further lift added in 2021.
The recent upgrade also brought dual-speed escalators and a new lift linking the platforms, mezzanine and concourse. The station was among the first ten to receive extra bicycle parking under the National Cycling Plan. At either end of the mezzanine, Koh Bee Liang’s stained-glass murals, T.R.A.N.S.I.T.I.O.N.S., contrast old kampung life in Sengkang with today’s high-rise town and fill the station with coloured light.
Many everyday errands are only a minute or two from Sengkang MRT station. Compass One is about 70 m away, and the food centres Encik Tan and Kopitiam are even closer, so a quick meal or a shopping trip barely requires leaving the station. Sengkang Public Library is about 90 m away. Sengkang Community Club is around four minutes on foot, and Sengkang General & Community Hospital is roughly an eight minute walk, which makes the station a practical arrival point for patients and visitors.
