Most passengers are people who live in Hougang and use the station for their daily trips to work, school and the shops. Because the bus interchange is built on top of the station, many commuters also change between a feeder or trunk bus and the train here. Shoppers heading to Hougang Mall, and patients visiting Hougang Polyclinic, add to the daily traffic. Hougang is set to become an interchange in future: it has been chosen as a stop on Phase 1 of the Cross Island Line, now expected around 2030.
History of Hougang MRT station
The station was among the sixteen North East Line stops announced in March 1996, and it opened to passengers on 20 June 2003 together with the rest of the line. To make room for the works, the bus interchange above was moved to a temporary site and only returned to its original location on 20 May 2001. A nearby home for elderly residents was also relocated so that its occupants would not be affected by construction noise and dust.
Inside Hougang MRT station
The station is spread over two levels and has three entrances, one of them topped with a distinctive circular roof. The platforms are wheelchair-accessible, and tactile floor tiles with raised studs guide visually impaired passengers from the entrances to the trains. Like most North East Line stations, it also serves as a Civil Defence shelter. Look out for Hands Up For Hougang by Seck Yok Ying, an artwork made from 3,000 handprints, many of them pressed into clay by local residents and the people who built the station.
For most visitors, Hougang MRT station is the starting point for errands and meals in the town centre. Within a few minutes’ walk you can reach:
