Bakau LRT Station

Bakau LRT station is a stop on the East Loop of the Sengkang LRT in the Sengkang estate, and it carries the station code SE3. Like every station on this line, it is elevated, so trains run on a viaduct above the roads and housing blocks around it. The Sengkang LRT is a driverless automated guideway system with 14 stations spread across two loops. Both loops meet at Sengkang station, where passengers can change to the North East Line for journeys further into the city.

Most of the people using the station live in the surrounding Sengkang flats. They ride the East Loop for short hops between home and Sengkang station, where they connect to the MRT. Others use it for everyday errands at the shops, coffee shops and markets within walking distance. Visitors tend to come for the local malls and food outlets rather than for tourist sights, and the light rail saves them a walk across the estate.

History of Bakau LRT station

Bakau LRT station opened with the rest of the East Loop on 18 January 2003, when the Sengkang LRT became Singapore’s second light rail line after the Bukit Panjang LRT. Trains originally ran as single cars, and two-car operation began on 22 December 2015 to cope with growing ridership.

Tips for using Bakau LRT station

  • Most of the nearby food centres and malls are within a ten-minute walk of the station, so walking is a reasonable option for short trips in dry weather.
  • Punggol Plaza is approximately 1,100 metres away, which makes it a noticeably longer walk compared to the other destinations; consider taking the LRT or another mode of transport to get there more comfortably.
  • Bakau is a station on the Sengkang LRT East Loop, so you may need to travel via Sengkang MRT interchange to connect to other lines or cross-town destinations.
  • The LRT operates in a loop direction, so if your intended stop appears to be just one station away on the map, it may be quicker to travel the longer way around depending on the current loop direction.
