Tampines East MRT station is an underground stop on the Downtown Line, where it carries the code DT33. Most of the people using the station live in the HDB estates of Tampines North and Tampines East, or are heading to Tampines North Park. It is also a busy stop for students, as East Spring Secondary School, Ngee Ann Secondary School and Dunman Secondary School are all within reach. Between January 2024 and December 2027, Temasek Junior College is based at a holding site on the former Tampines Junior College campus, and the station serves its students and staff during that period.
History of Tampines East MRT station
Work on the station began in late November 2011 and affected the whole stretch of Tampines Avenue 7 between Tampines Street 42 and the junction with Tampines Avenues 2 and 9. Residents may remember that the avenue was realigned on 25 March 2012 to make room for the works. The Land Transport Authority confirmed the opening on 31 May 2017, and the station welcomed its first passengers on 21 October 2017.
Inside Tampines East MRT station
Every entrance has a lift, and a further lift links the concourse with the platform, so the station is fully accessible for wheelchair users, parents with prams and travellers with heavy luggage. Tactile flooring guides visually impaired passengers from the entrances all the way to the boarding platform.
A Cheers convenience store sits on the concourse level beside Entrance A, which is handy for a drink or snack before boarding. Like most Downtown Line stations, it is also designated as a Civil Defence shelter. Above the platform, look out for Welcome to Jingapore! by photographer Quek Jing Cheng, an Art-in-Transit work that places 200 members of the public among landmarks of the Tampines East area.
For residents, Tampines East MRT station is mainly an everyday link for commuting and school runs, while visitors tend to come for local amenities. The Fitness Area is only about a two minute walk away, and Tampines East Community Club is around five minutes on foot.
