Kallang MRT Station

Kallang MRT station is an elevated stop on the East West Line, numbered EW10, standing beside Sims Avenue where it is bounded by Lorong 1 Geylang in the Kallang area. SMRT Trains operates the line, and the station is built above ground with a single island platform, so passengers travelling in either direction wait on the same level between the two tracks.

A large share of passengers are people changing between trains and buses at Lorong 1 Geylang Terminal, which is about 90 m away and roughly a minute on foot. History of Kallang MRT station

The station was first planned in 1982 under the name Geylang and took its present name in October 1983. It welcomed its first passengers on 4 November 1989, when the eastern section of the line from Bugis to Tanah Merah opened. Its original station number was E3, which became EW10 in August 2001 when codes were revised across the expanding network. The segmented, dome-shaped roof, shared with many stations in the east, has been likened by The Straits Times to both a caterpillar and a rib cage.

The station is wheelchair accessible through every entrance except Exit A, and there are facilities for parking bicycles. Half-height platform screen doors line the platform edges, and large high-volume low-speed fans help keep the platform area cooler.

For most visitors, Kallang MRT station is a practical starting point for the sports and leisure area to the south. The National Stadium is about 850 m away, roughly a 14 minute walk, and a sheltered linkway connects the station towards it, which helps on rainy match days. Kallang Wave Mall, around 15 minutes on foot, and Aperia Mall, about 13 minutes away, cover shopping and meals. Students and staff can reach James Cook University Singapore in about 11 minutes, while S111 Eating House offers a nearby option for local food at a similar distance. Residents mainly use the station for daily commuting and for quick connections at the bus terminal right next door.
