Most passengers are people who live in the surrounding housing estate. Many ride the short distance to Sengkang station, where both LRT loops meet and riders can change to the North East Line of the MRT network for journeys towards the city and other parts of Singapore. Shoppers and diners heading to the market, food centres and mall beside the station also use it, as do residents attending activities at the nearby community club.
History of Kangkar LRT station
Kangkar LRT station is part of the East Loop, which opened to passengers on 18 January 2003, and riders travelled free of charge during the first two days. The East Loop was the first part of the Sengkang LRT to open because, at that time, around nine in ten Sengkang residents lived along its route, while the area served by the West Loop was still largely undeveloped. Trains on the line originally ran as single cars, and two-car trains were introduced in December 2015 to cope with growing passenger numbers.
Inside Kangkar LRT station
Services here are run by SBS Transit using driverless Crystal Mover trains built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, so there is no driver’s cab and passengers can stand at the very front of the car. A new fleet of two-car trains has been entering service since 15 July 2025, with more sets due to arrive until 2028, gradually replacing many of the older single-car and two-car trains.
For everyday errands, the station is very convenient. Sengkang New Market and the Kopitiam food centre are both only a couple of minutes on foot, making it easy to pick up fresh produce or a quick meal. Rivervale Plaza offers shopping close to the platforms, and Rivervale Community Club is just as near for residents taking part in classes, meetings and neighbourhood events.
Another food centre, Koufu, is also within a short walk, so those looking for something to eat have several choices around Kangkar LRT station. Visitors coming from further afield can reach the area by taking the North East Line to Sengkang and then changing to the East Loop of the LRT for the short ride to SE4.
