Expo MRT Station
Expo MRT station stands on Changi South Avenue 1 at its junction with Expo Drive, in the Tampines planning area of eastern Singapore. It is an interchange between two lines. On the East West Line’s Changi Airport branch it carries the code CG1, and on the Downtown Line it is DT35. The two parts of the station are built quite differently: the East West Line platforms are raised on a viaduct above Changi South Avenue 1, while the Downtown Line platforms sit underground beneath the road junction.

The station is named after Singapore Expo, the convention and exhibition centre next to it, and it draws many of its passengers when events are on there. On ordinary working days it serves people employed in Changi Business Park, where offices include UE Bizhub East, IBM Place and DBS Asia Hub. It also serves shoppers heading to Changi City Point and passengers changing between the East West Line and the Downtown Line.
History of Expo MRT station
The elevated East West Line station opened on 10 January 2001 at the request of Singapore Expo, a full year before trains ran on to the airport. A few months later, a charity walk held for the President’s Challenge 2001 passed through the tunnel between Expo and Changi Airport. In August 2011 it became the last East West Line station to be fitted with half-height platform screen doors, and the underground Downtown Line platforms opened on 21 October 2017.
Inside Expo MRT station
The elevated part of Expo MRT station was designed by Foster and Partners and is easy to recognise. A stainless steel roof 40 metres across covers the concourse, overlapping a 130 metre titanium roof above the platforms that deflects the sun’s heat and keeps the platforms up to 4 °C cooler than outside. The interior is mostly stone, glass and metal, so it was the first MRT station built without needing paint. Step-free access is provided by a lift in a transparent shaft, alongside escalators. The underground Downtown Line station, designed by Greenhilli, uses colour, daylight and large graphics to help passengers find their way.
For most visitors, the station is the stop for an exhibition or trade show at Singapore Expo. Changi City Point is about a two minute walk away and is the obvious choice for shopping or a meal, while Plaza 8 is roughly six minutes on foot. For something quick and inexpensive to eat, Mr Teh Tarik is around four minutes away and MarketPlace @ Expo about six. Students and staff can reach the Singapore University of Technology and Design campus in roughly twelve minutes on foot, and ITE College East and the Changi Business Park Bus Terminal are each about a fourteen minute walk from the station.

The area is anchored by exhibition and retail facilities such as Changi City Point and Plaza 8, alongside educational institutions including Singapore University of Technology and Design Campus.
