Newton MRT Station

Newton MRT station is an underground interchange in the Newton district of central Singapore, sitting at the junction of Scotts Road and Bukit Timah Road close to Newton Circus. It is served by two lines: the North South Line, where it carries the code NS21, and the Downtown Line, where it is numbered DT11. The North South Line platforms lie beneath Scotts Road, while the Downtown Line platforms are closer to Newton Flyover and Bukit Timah Road.

Most passengers are people who live or work around Newton Circus. The area is a mix of offices and condominiums, including Goldbell Towers and Scotts Highpark, and the station also brings in diners heading to the hawker stalls nearby. Students and families use it too, since several schools and colleges are within reach on foot.

History of Newton MRT station

The North South Line platforms opened on 12 December 1987, when the line was extended south to Outram Park. During planning the station was called Newton Circus, but the name was shortened to Newton and the site was moved slightly towards Scotts Road rather than directly under the roundabout. It became an interchange on 27 December 2015 with the opening of the second stage of the Downtown Line. Late in 2024 the Downtown Line station was one of a handful chosen for a scent trial, with a light fig and eucalyptus fragrance released through diffusers.

Inside Newton MRT station

The two lines are not linked inside the paid area, so to change trains you leave one station and walk through a 56 metre underpass that joins the exits along Scotts Road. Fares still treat this as a single journey provided the transfer takes no more than 15 minutes. The North South Line station was among the first nine underground stations built as a Civil Defence shelter, which is why its entrances have steel sliding walls and blast locks. The older platforms use a saffron colour scheme, and the Downtown Line station displays an artwork called Newton by Messymsxi.

For many visitors the main reason to stop here is Newton Food Centre, a well known hawker centre about four minutes away on foot. The Alliance Française de Singapour is even closer, around two minutes from the station, and Balmoral Plaza can be reached in roughly seven minutes. Students at LASALLE College of the Arts (Winstedt Campus) have about an eight minute walk. Those willing to walk a little further can reach Far East Plaza and Mount Elizabeth Hospital, making Newton MRT station a practical starting point for the northern end of Scotts Road.
