The station mainly serves people who live in the surrounding housing estates, particularly Kebun Baru Heights, along with students and staff travelling to nearby schools. Worshippers heading to local religious buildings and residents visiting the neighbourhood food centre also use it. With seven entrances, more than any other station opened in the same stage of the line, it is spread out to reach several parts of the estate from different sides of the avenue.
History of Mayflower MRT station
Plans for the station were first revealed in August 2012, when it was included in the proposed Thomson Line, which was later combined with the Eastern Region Line to become the Thomson-East Coast Line. Because the site runs beneath a busy road on sloping ground, builders had to divert traffic in 15 separate phases and deal with uneven heights when setting up their heavy equipment. The opening was pushed back by restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic and a review of the line’s rail software, and Mayflower MRT station finally began serving passengers on 28 August 2021.
Inside Mayflower MRT station
All entrances are barrier-free, which makes the station easier to use for older residents, wheelchair users and anyone with prams or luggage. Hexagonal patterns based on a honeycomb appear on the entrances, roof panels and linkways. As a nod to the area’s long tradition of songbird keeping, 22 bird sculptures by artist Song-Ming Ang are placed around the station, showing seven species commonly kept as pets in Singapore, such as the Oriental white-eye, the red-whiskered bulbul and the zebra dove. The station is also a designated Civil Defence shelter, built with a reinforced structure, blast doors, air vents that can be sealed against toxic gases, and decontamination cubicles.
For residents and visitors alike, Mayflower MRT station is a practical stop for everyday errands and local trips in this part of Ang Mo Kio. Its entrances link to places such as Mayflower Market & Food Centre, a good choice for an inexpensive meal, and Kebun Baru Community Club, where residents attend classes and community events.
Families and students use it to get to CHIJ Saint Nicholas Girls’ School and Mayflower Secondary School, while those attending services can walk to Ang Mo Kio Joint Temple or Ang Mo Kio Methodist Church. If you are visiting someone in the Kebun Baru area, this is usually the most convenient station to aim for.
Around Mayflower MRT station
Mayflower station serves a mostly residential part of Ang Mo Kio, with HDB blocks around Kebun Baru and the private Mayflower and Ellington estates. Mayflower Market and Food Centre and Kebun Baru Community Club are right by the station, and CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School, Mayflower Secondary School and Ang Mo Kio Primary School are all close by.
