The station sits where two quite different parts of Kaki Bukit meet, and its passengers reflect that. On one side are the industrial estates, including Eunos Techpark, Kaki Bukit Techpark and TechView, where many people come to work. On the other are the public housing blocks along Bedok Reservoir Road, Jalan Damai and Jalan Tenaga, whose residents rely on the station for everyday travel. Two entrances serve these areas, and a link bridge connects them.
History of Kaki Bukit MRT station
The station opened on 21 October 2017 with the rest of the third stage of the Downtown Line, having first been announced in August 2010. Building it meant closing the stretch of Kaki Bukit Avenue 1 between Jalan Tenaga and Jalan Damai from August 2011 until the road reopened on 24 April 2016, with traffic diverted onto widened side roads in the meantime. Members of the public were able to look around the new station at an open house on 15 October 2017, a few days before trains began running.
Inside Kaki Bukit MRT station
The station is wheelchair accessible, with wider fare gates for wheelchair users and a tactile guidance system of raised studded tiles that leads visually impaired passengers from the entrances to the platforms. Inside, granite columns support the structure, while the entrances are finished in glass and aluminium panels. On the platform, near the escalators up to the concourse, you will find Welcome to Kaki Bukit by Hans Tan, a video artwork in which local residents and workers write the greeting in English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. Residents write “Welcome”, workers write “Kaki Bukit” and the artist adds “to”, linking the two halves of the area.
Beyond commuting to the techparks, Kaki Bukit MRT station is a practical base for everyday errands and meals in the surrounding estates. Wee’s Family Coffee Shop and 121 Reservoir Kopi Point are both about a seven minute walk away for a quick breakfast or lunch, and Pasar 630 Bedok Reservoir Road, an eleven minute walk, offers market stalls and hawker food. For some fresh air, Jalan Singa Park is around eight minutes on foot, while worshippers can reach Alkaff Kampung Melayu Mosque in roughly eleven minutes.
