Yio Chu Kang MRT Station

Yio Chu Kang MRT station is an elevated stop on the North South Line, shown on maps with the code NS15. It stands in the northern part of Ang Mo Kio, close to the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, on a plot that also borders Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9. Passengers buy tickets and pass through the gates at street level, then go upstairs to the raised platforms where the trains stop.

Much of the daily crowd is made up of students. Nanyang Polytechnic and Anderson Serangoon Junior College are both next to the station, and Presbyterian High School is also nearby. The station also serves people living and working in the housing and industrial estates of northern Ang Mo Kio. Heading north, the run to Khatib is the longest stretch between any two neighbouring stations on the whole MRT network, so expect a noticeably longer ride on that section.

History of Yio Chu Kang MRT station

Yio Chu Kang opened on 7 November 1987 as part of the very first section of the MRT, which makes it one of the five oldest stations in Singapore. It was first planned for a later phase of the network, but in 1983 it was brought forward into the opening stage. Planners expected this to ease the passenger load at neighbouring Ang Mo Kio, which was forecast to be one of the busiest stations on the early system. The station was formerly known by the code N10 before the current NS15 numbering came into use.

The ground floor concourse is enclosed by glass walls, while the platforms upstairs are open to the surroundings and supported by slim, tiled columns, giving the station a light and airy feel. Half-height platform screen doors have been in use on the platforms since 18 October 2011.

For most people, Yio Chu Kang MRT station is the link between the train and the local bus network, as Yio Chu Kang Bus Interchange is only about 50 m away, roughly a one minute walk. Sports fans and runners can reach Yio Chu Kang Stadium in about four minutes on foot, and Nanyang Polytechnic is around seven minutes away.
