Woodlands MRT Station
Woodlands MRT station sits in the heart of Woodlands town in northern Singapore, where it serves as an interchange between the North South Line (NS9) and the Thomson-East Coast Line (TE2). The two sets of platforms are built differently. The North South Line platforms are elevated on a 6 m hillock ringed by Woodlands Square, while the Thomson-East Coast Line platforms lie underground between Woodlands Avenue 2 and Woodlands Square. The station is part of a larger cluster of buildings. It is connected to Causeway Point and the Woodlands Civic Centre, and the Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub sits directly beneath the elevated platforms. Most passengers are Woodlands residents travelling to work or school, shoppers heading to the malls around Woodlands Square, and commuters switching between trains and buses at the interchange below.
History of Woodlands MRT station
The North South Line station opened on 10 February 1996 as one of the stations on the Woodlands extension, which linked Yishun and Choa Chu Kang. It was the first MRT station in Singapore to have a bus interchange built underneath it. Its rounded, barrel-shaped roof, finished in beige and green tiles, still makes it easy to spot from the street. The station became an interchange on 31 January 2020, when the first stage of the Thomson-East Coast Line began running.
Inside Woodlands MRT station
The elevated North South Line platforms have had half-height platform screen doors since 2012. Large, slow-turning ceiling fans were added between 2012 and 2013 to keep the open-air platforms cooler. The underground Thomson-East Coast Line platforms are designated as a Civil Defence Shelter. They are designed to feel spacious and bright, with a brown, grey and green colour scheme. On the artwork side, the 15 m stainless steel sculpture Faces II stands at the North South Line station, and Terence Lin’s The Day’s Thoughts of a Homespun Journey lines the walls of the Thomson-East Coast Line station.
