The future MRT map of Singapore adds two completely new lines, the Jurong Region Line and the Cross Island Line, plus a cross-border link to Johor Bahru and extensions to the Downtown and Thomson-East Coast Lines. This future MRT map will fill in gradually: several projects are expected between late 2026 and 2028, Cross Island Line Phase 1 is planned for 2030, and more phases, extensions and new stations are scheduled through the 2030s into the early 2040s. Two further lines, the Seletar Line and the Tengah Line, are still being studied. The most recent change is already in service. Circle Line Stage 6 opened in July 2026 and closed the loop, as covered in our Circle Line Stage 6 opening report.

Downtown Line extensions
The next addition to the Downtown Line is a 2.2 km extension from Expo. It adds two stations and ends at Sungei Bedok, where passengers will be able to change to the Thomson-East Coast Line. It was planned to open in 2026 but had not opened as of October 2026. Once it does, the line is expected to measure 44 km with 37 stations. The most recent station to open on the line was Hume, on 28 February 2025. You can see the current route on our Downtown Line map.
A second extension is planned at the northern end. It will run from Bukit Panjang to a new Sungei Kadut station on the North-South Line, with one station in between that has not yet been named. Opening is planned for 2035.
Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 5, Founders’ Memorial and the Changi Airport extension
Stage 5 of the Thomson-East Coast Line runs from Bedok South to Sungei Bedok and is planned for the second half of 2026. As of October 2026, neither Bedok South nor Sungei Bedok is open. Further along the existing Stage 4 route, Founders’ Memorial station is an infill station due to open alongside the Founders’ Memorial development by the end of 2028.
The larger project is an extension to Changi Airport, which is under construction. The line will pass through the new Terminal 5. Changi Terminal 5 station will sit in the terminal’s ground transportation centre beside the Changi East Urban District. The extension is also planned to absorb the existing Changi Airport branch of the East-West Line, which includes Expo and Tanah Merah. That would give a direct rail link between the airport and the city. Opening is expected by the mid-2030s, and the tunnelling contract between the current Changi Airport station and Changi Terminal 5 has been awarded. Our Thomson-East Coast Line map shows the stations open today.
RTS Link to Johor Bahru
The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link is a 4 km twin-track line across the Strait of Johor. It will connect Woodlands North station on the Singapore MRT with Bukit Chagar station in Johor Bahru. Operations are targeted for February 2027.
Both stations will have their own customs, immigration and quarantine facilities for both countries, separate from Woodlands Checkpoint and the Sultan Iskandar Building. Ridership is expected to start at about 40,000 passengers a day, with long-term plans for about 140,000. The KTM Shuttle Tebrau between JB Sentral and Woodlands Train Checkpoint is expected to be replaced by June 2027. More detail is in our article on Woodlands North and the RTS Link.
Jurong Region Line
The Jurong Region Line is an elevated medium-capacity line serving western Singapore, including Choa Chu Kang, Tengah, Jurong and West Coast. It uses smaller trains suited to tight curves. The line has several branches: the western section runs from Choa Chu Kang to Bahar Junction with branches to Tawas and Boon Lay, an eastern section runs from Tengah to Pandan Reservoir, and a western section continues to NTU and Jurong Pier. It is being built to be run by Singapore One Rail, a joint venture of SBS Transit and RATP Dev.
In March 2026 the opening of the first stage was moved to mid-2028. The delay was linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and to the difficulty of building viaducts beside HDB blocks, over the PIE and across a canal. A shuttle bus serving key stations is planned for the second half of 2027. No updated dates have been given for the later stages. Our Jurong Region Line construction update follows progress on site.
Two additions were announced later. JS2A, an infill station between Choa Chu Kang West and Tengah, is planned for the mid-2030s to serve the future Forest Hill district of Tengah. An eastward extension to the Circle Line is also under study. Its first phase, from Pandan Reservoir to West Coast on the Cross Island Line, is planned for the late 2030s. The second phase, on to Kent Ridge, is planned for the early 2040s.
Cross Island Line phases
The Cross Island Line is designed as an east to west line across the whole island, linking Changi, Pasir Ris, Punggol, Hougang, Ang Mo Kio, Sin Ming, Jurong and Tuas. It will connect with every other major line and is expected to take pressure off the East-West Line. At full length it is planned to measure 67 km. For a station-by-station breakdown, see our Cross Island Line guide.
Phase 1 covers 29 km and 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill, with a new Changi East Depot. It costs S$13.3 billion and is planned for 2030, one year later than first intended because of COVID-19 restrictions. Its route runs directly beneath the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, using deeper tunnels and no surface works in the reserve. The Punggol Extension, a 7.3 km branch from Pasir Ris to Punggol, is planned for 2032.
Phase 2 adds 15 km and six stations from Turf City to Jurong Lake District. Construction started in July 2025, with opening planned for 2032. Phase 3 adds 10 km and four stations. Two of these will be interchanges with Gul Circle and Jurong Pier, and the other two will serve Jurong Industrial Estate and Taman Jurong. Building work is due to begin in 2027, with opening expected in the late 2030s. An extension to Changi Terminal 5, with an interchange to the Thomson-East Coast Line, has also been confirmed, but no opening date has been announced.
Brickland and Sungei Kadut stations on the North-South Line
Two stations are planned on the existing North-South Line. Brickland will sit between Bukit Gombak and Choa Chu Kang and is expected in 2034. Sungei Kadut will sit between Yew Tee and Kranji and is expected in 2035. Sungei Kadut is also planned to become an interchange with the extended Downtown Line.
Seletar Line and Tengah Line
The Seletar Line is a proposed ninth MRT line studied since 2019 under the Land Transport Master Plan 2040. It would link the north and northeast with the south, serving areas such as Woodlands, Sembawang, Sengkang West, Serangoon North, Whampoa, Kallang and the Greater Southern Waterfront.
The Tengah Line was announced in March 2025 as another route from the west and northwest into town. It would serve Tengah, Bukit Batok, Queensway and Bukit Merah. Studies are looking at extending it to the Greater Southern Waterfront and joining it to the Seletar Line, in which case the two could become one line. Engineering studies for both lines are due to start in 2026, and no opening dates have been announced.
What the 2030 MRT map will look like
If current plans hold, the 2030 MRT map should include:
- The Downtown Line extension to Sungei Bedok and Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 5
- The RTS Link from Woodlands North to Johor Bahru
- The first stage of the Jurong Region Line
- Founders’ Memorial station
- Cross Island Line Phase 1 from Aviation Park to Bright Hill
Everything else comes later. The Punggol Extension and Cross Island Line Phase 2 are planned for 2032, Brickland for 2034, and Sungei Kadut with the Downtown Line link for 2035. The Changi Airport extension and JS2A are expected in the mid-2030s, followed by Cross Island Line Phase 3 and the first Jurong Region Line extension phase in the late 2030s. The link to Kent Ridge is expected in the early 2040s. Until then, the current interactive MRT map shows what you can ride today.
