Downtown station is not an interchange, so passengers needing connections to other MRT lines will have to travel to a neighbouring station. Bayfront station, one stop away, connects to the Circle Line, giving access to destinations across the island including Marina Bay Sands and the Botanic Gardens. In the other direction, Telok Ayer station is the next stop and remains on the Downtown Line, serving the older commercial streets south of the CBD core.
The station sits within walking distance of the Shenton Way financial corridor, where rows of office towers and corporate headquarters line the streets. The surrounding area is primarily a working environment of banks, law firms, and professional services, with a scattering of coffee shops and lunch spots serving the daytime crowd.
