Concession fares: students, seniors and persons with disabilities

Concession card fares are much lower and are capped after 7.2 km, so a senior or student never pays more than about a dollar for an MRT trip. These are the fares in force since 27 December 2025. From 26 December 2026 concession card fares rise by 5 cents per journey. Workfare Transport Concession cardholders pay a separate reduced scale and are not affected by the 2026 increase.

Distance Senior citizen or PWD card Student card
Up to 3.2 km S$0.69 S$0.52
3.3 to 4.2 km S$0.79 S$0.60
4.3 to 5.2 km S$0.87 S$0.66
5.3 to 6.2 km S$0.94 S$0.71
6.3 to 7.2 km S$1.00 S$0.74
Over 7.2 km S$1.07 S$0.78

Tap in before 7.45am on a weekday and concession fares drop by 50 cents too, which is why a short early trip can cost a student as little as 2 cents.

How MRT fares are worked out

  • Distance, not stations. The fare depends on the distance between where you tap in and where you tap out, not on the number of stations or lines you use. Changing between MRT lines inside the paid area costs nothing extra.
  • Bus and train count as one journey. If you transfer between a bus and the MRT within the allowed transfer time, the distances are added together and you pay one fare for the whole trip rather than two separate fares.
  • No single-trip tickets. MRT stations no longer sell paper tickets. You pay by tapping a SimplyGo EZ-Link card, a contactless Visa or Mastercard, or a phone wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. See how to pay for the MRT.
  • Tourists. If you will ride more than about six times a day, the Singapore Tourist Pass with unlimited rides can work out cheaper. For most visitors, tapping a bank card is simpler and costs the same as a local card.
  • Monthly passes. Adult Monthly Travel Passes give unlimited bus and train rides for a flat monthly price and were not changed in the 2026 fare review. They suit people commuting twice a day over longer distances.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an MRT ride in Singapore?

An adult paying by card pays between S$1.28 and S$2.57 per trip, depending on distance. Most trips within the city centre cost S$1.28 to S$1.75.

Is there a discount for travelling early?

Yes. Tap in at any MRT or LRT station before 7.45am on a weekday (not a public holiday) and you pay 50 cents less than the normal fare.

When do MRT fares go up next?

On 26 December 2026. Adult card fares rise by 12 cents for trips up to 3.2 km and 13 cents for longer trips. Concession card fares rise by 5 cents. Monthly pass prices do not change.

Do tourists pay more than locals?

No. A foreign contactless bank card is charged the same adult fare as a local SimplyGo card. Your bank may add a small foreign transaction fee on top.

Is the MRT cheaper than the bus?

Trunk bus and MRT card fares use the same distance scale, so a trip of the same length costs the same on either, and a bus plus MRT journey with a transfer is charged as one trip.
